They tried to plant me in a pot that was two sizes too small
Kept clipping back my edges so I’d never grow at all
Said a girl like me should stay where the ground was safe and neat
But I broke the china rim and I put down deeper feet
Now I’m stretching through the cracks they swore would hold me down
Turning every “no” they gave me into something I can own
I don’t ask the weather if I’m allowed to rise
I just keep on growing underneath an open sky
They kept saying I was too much for this little plot of land
So I split the dirt wide open with these two empty hands
I grew my own damn roots, I don’t need your soil!
Blooming through the concrete, making beauty out of toil!
I don’t wait for spring to tell me when to start
I push through winter with a wild, stubborn heart!
Yeah, I rise from nothing, I break through stone
Call me too wild, call me loud — I’m still fully grown!
I grew my own damn roots, baby — watch this garden own!
People keep asking if I’m lonely in this field alone
I just laugh and say the quiet helped me find my own
No more shrinking so somebody else could have the sun
I take every inch of light and I call that won
I don’t need a gardener to tell me how to live
I became the harvest with everything I give
They kept saying I was too much for this little plot of land
So I split the dirt wide open with these two empty hands
I grew my own damn roots, I don’t need your soil!
Blooming through the concrete, making beauty out of toil!
I don’t wait for spring to tell me when to start
I push through winter with a wild, stubborn heart!
Yeah, I rise from nothing, I break through stone
Call me too wild, call me loud — I’m still fully grown!
I grew my own damn roots, baby — watch this garden own!
And when the frost comes back and tries to lock me in
I remember every season that I already win
No more needing perfect weather just to feel complete
I became the whole damn orchard underneath my feet
I grew my own damn roots, I don’t need your soil! (don’t need your soil!)
Blooming through the concrete, making beauty out of toil!
I don’t wait for spring to tell me when to start
I push through winter with a wild, stubborn heart!
Yeah, I rise from nothing, I break through stone
Call me too wild, call me loud — watch me take this throne!
I grew my own damn roots, baby — watch this garden own!
Yeah… I grew my own damn roots…
Watch this garden own…
